The Haunted Palace

Here's my mockup book cover for the poem "The Haunted Palace" that is contained in the story " The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe.

The Haunted Palace
by Edgar Allan Poe

In the greenest of our valleys
By good angels tenanted,
Once a fair and stately palace —
Radiant palace — reared its head.
In the monarch Thought's dominion —
It stood there!
Never seraph spread a pinion
Over fabric half so fair!

Banners yellow, glorious, golden,
On its roof did float and flow,
(This — all this — was in the olden
Time long ago,)
And every gentle air that dallied,
In that sweet day,
Along the ramparts plumed and pallid,
A winged odor went away.

Wanderers in that happy valley,
Through two luminous windows, saw
Spirits moving musically,
To a lute's well-tuned law,
Round about a throne where, sitting
(Porphyrogene!)
In state his glory well-befitting,
The ruler of the realm was seen.

And all with pearl and ruby glowing
Was the fair palace door,
Through which came flowing, flowing, flowing,
And sparkling evermore,
A troop of Echoes, whose sweet duty
Was but to sing,
In voices of surpassing beauty,
The wit and wisdom of their king.

But evil things, in robes of sorrow,
Assailed the monarch's high estate.
(Ah, let us mourn! — for never morrow
Shall dawn upon him desolate!)
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
Is but a dim-remembered story
Of the old time entombed.

And travellers, now, within that valley,
Through the red-litten windows see
Vast forms, that move fantastically
To a discordant melody,
While, like a ghastly rapid river,
Through the pale door
A hideous throng rush out forever
And laugh — but smile no more.

I know you've been naughty...

Here's my version of a Krampus card.

Here's my 6 year old daughter's version.

William Burroughs

Here's a tiny 3 inch portrait that I did of Bill Burroughs. Oddly enough, no one that's been in my house has ever asked who it is.

Ghosts'n Goblins

Here's the black line art for an upcoming group show. The theme of the show is retro gaming, and I chose to interpret the classic Capcom game "Ghosts'n Goblins". I'm not sure how it will turn out, but the drawing has been fun so far. The final painting will be 12"x36" Acrylic on canvas.

Here's another of my Halloween cutouts.

Halloween Silhouettes

Tonight's experiment was to create various Halloween cutouts and then project them onto a wall. I took these two pics in the upstairs hallway before my camera started having a mind of its own...

The Call of Cthulhu

I've set the mood for my October by reading short stories by H. P. Lovecraft. Here's a drawing of a book cover for the Cthulhu Mythos.

Here's a drawing that I finished working on this weekend.

Dream House

Here's a design I did for a version of my website that never materialized. I might use it for the backdrop of an animation someday...

Mini Haunted House

Here's a miniature haunted house that I made a while back. It was supposed to match the larger version that I made years ago.

Son House Woodcut

While I was working on the Son House painting, I figured I would do a woodcut of the same composition.

Woodcut on handmade paper, 4 x 6 inches.

Son House Painting

It's been a while since I've posted artwork, so maybe this blog will make it easier. Here's the latest painting of the legend Son House.

Acrylic on canvas 16 x 20 inches.

Witch Print

Here's my second attempt at relief printing. The image is 6x8 and is printed on handmade Tibetan paper. I got through the whole carving without cutting myself...

Haunted House Model

Well, the exterior of the house has been complete for a few weeks now, but because it is so big, it's taken me a while to get a decent photo outside. I took this one today because the sky was overcast. The image of the house hasn't been modified, but I added the grass, sky, and trees to complete the effect. I probably won't start on the interior for a few years.
